This is the second try on this piece and the path has been instructional.

I was blown away with the old Hollywood look of Anya Taylor-Joy on the Golden Globes this year. Concurrently, I’ve been wanting to learn how to paint better and I had a few ideas.

I don’t want to get too much into what I did the first time, but it was a disaster. I was just trying to do too much at the same time and it was a mess!

I took a step back, did a little research and re-thought the process.

This time I did the entire piece in black and white, and it turned out much more cohesive and powerful.

My next step was to color it, and I ended up with two versions from that.

There are things that I like about both versions, but what I enjoy the most is how I can do about 80% of the mood and palette by setting up the greyscale version and using gradient maps to establish the base colors.

I might do a video on the subject soon. I’m about to do a new painting and this is unquestionably the method I’ll use from now on.

Which one is your favorite?
