Feminism and BDSM

Tequila Rose recently shared a personal story and some thoughts on modern feminism and being a submissive woman.  I’ve heard other women with very similar stories, where friends or acquaintances tell a woman that they are not good feminists because they are submissive to… shudder… a MAN.

Without fail the criticism always comes from people who have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.  Ignorance about BDSM is still exceptionally high. Reading Fifty Shades of Grey certainly doesn’t give you any understanding about a real BDSM relationship, and the drop-off in knowledge is stunningly sharp after that.

Very few people understand the potential for growth and empowerment through BDSM.  You don’t have to be on top to gain insight into yourself and sexual fulfillment that may not be possible any other way.  Being submissive, whether you are a man or woman, does not mean that you are weak or flawed or, “setting back the woman’s rights movement by twenty years”.

Being submissive in a relationship takes more guts than you can possibly imagine.  It’s a challenging proposition that can make you much more than you’ve ever been.

If you are a supporter of feminism then you should also support the right of a woman to choose how to live their lives, in and out of the bedroom.

Dirk Hooper Photography and The Fetish Show Updates

Mistress Daria in a recent photo by Dirk Hooper

We’ve been working hard on the new episode of The Fetish Show.  We should do our last segment this week and have the show out soon after that.  Recently we updated the computer, the mixer, the software and the recording equipment we use to create episodes.  You should see an improvement on the sound quality and the effects that we can do.  We are very close to what you would hear in a big studio now.  More details soon!

Also, I’ve recently had the opportunity to shoot with Mistress Daria and the photos we got were great!  Even more recently Goddess Sieva travelled from Wisconsin to shoot with me and I’m getting close to working those shots.

I just wrapped up an appearance at Dirty Show in Detroit.  The Dirty Show is the biggest erotic art show in North America and it’s always an honor to be included in that show.  The piece that made it into the show is titled QISS and features Apple Angel and members of TnT Burlesque.

I’ve got another major shoot scheduled next weekend, and maybe another couple of smaller shoots, so there will be a lot of updates coming here soon!

Since I’ve got a stocking fetish myself, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to feature Miss Kitty here.

How To Shave Your Bits

Red Vinyl Kitten from The Sub Mission gives a quick and simple guide on how to shave your private parts.  This piece is written from the perspective of a submissive, which is an interesting take on the subject.

If you’ve never visited The Sub Mission, there is a good combination of personal stories, opinion, advice and reviews.  I suggest you visit there and take a look around.

Race and Burlesque: The curious case of the performer of colour

Chocolat the Extraordinaire writes an article for 21st Century Burlesque that gets my highest recommendation.  Not only does she give her own personal experience, she breaks down an extensive history of women of color in burlesque and gives everyone a call to action.  This is an excellent in-depth article with a ton of information.  Take a moment and read something that will make you a cooler person.

BDSM Relationships: Making It Last

Thanks to Holly at Kink Lovers for addressing an important aspect of a BDSM relationship.  When you begin a new BDSM relationship learning about your partner is always intense and exciting.  Keeping things fresh for both partners can be just as challenging in a kinky relationship as it is in a vanilla relationship.

There are some good ideas here.  Do you have some more?  Send them to me at dirk@dirkhooper.com.  I’d like to do a piece on this subject for The Fetish Show.
