Fetish, Kink, and BDSM in the News

How BDSM Can Help You Deal with Serious Illness

One of the things that I want to do, here on FETISHWEEK articles, in sharing of news and writing elsewhere, and in my own projects, is to strongly refute the common misconception that BDSM is perverted or bad for you.

So, when an article comes along, especially an article from a source like Scientific American, that states outright that BDSM can be a wonderful healing part of your life… then I pay special attention.

And so should you.

The article recounts how the writer’s mother, in her late 50s, dealt with some serious medical issues by enjoying a newfound interest in BDSM.

From the article,

“This broadly accepting community facilitates connections that can help a person fight against the often alienating experience of illness. Where many of us assume vanilla sex between heterosexual partners to be a private matter, we recognize that kink, BDSM and queer sex have long been grounded in communities of advocacy, activism and mutual support. That isn’t to say that every person feels connected immediately when they discover their sexuality, but it is to say that the communities are there to be discovered, and they can be lifesavers.”

This is an article about triumph and BDSM, from a respected source.

If you’ve ever had to explain why you enjoy BDSM to a friend or a loved one, articles like this help. We need so much more like this, but this is a great start.

The War on Backpage.com Is a War on Sex Workers

Many of my friends, lovers, and clients are sex workers, so I’ve heard from them personally about how SESTA/FOSTA has affected their business.

The first shot in the New Puritan Movement was taking down BackPage.

BackPage, and the owners, had plenty of problems before the fight with the United States government. They are not white knights for sure.

But what’s going on with BackPage, and other sites that were based in, or operated in, the US, is very informative about what’s going on.

I contend that SESTA/FOSTA is a clear violation of our First Amendment rights, and will be struck down as soon as there is a challenge… but have you noticed that the US government is not actually using that law to take down sites? They know it’s bunk too. But they want it on the books to intimidate websites and sex workers.

If you want to see more on how they do that, look no further than this documentary from Reason.

There are infinite ways to have sex & there’s nothing unnatural about any of them

Here is an interesting, informative and even-handed discussion of fetishes. But more importantly, the message is that you are healthy and normal, even if you’re kinky!

Why Kink, BDSM, and Leather Should Be Included at Pride

This is a discussion that I feel should be left to the people who participate in Pride.

But I’m fascinated by this story, and I’m listening. I hope you are too.

After Tumblr’s NSFW ban, these adult communities have come out on top

Fast Company has a nice breakdown on what losing Tumblr meant to people who create adult content.

I wrote a piece on Sexy Networking with a few more options, but this is from Fast Company.

The best-case scenario is for PornHub to buy Tumblr and fix it, but until then check out this post on why banning NSFW content can kill 30% of your site’s traffic.

New Art Gallery!

Last week I made a major update to this website. I have a new style and a new gallery to share this work.

I’m calling this new style “KinkInk” (thanks to all of you on Twitter who helped me come up with this name) and you can see the results below. The new style is based on my two decades of experience as a comic artist, features kink, BDSM, and fetish subjects, and wild neon colors.

Please visit my new KinkInk Gallery Page to see more, and check back frequently, because I’m producing new pieces regularly.

It’s Time to Protect and Diversify Your Adult Brand. Here’s How.

I wrote this article on Sexy Networking after dealing with having a YouTube video and a content violation on Facebook. Since then I’ve also had a photo removed on Instagram.

It’s frustrating to try and share adult content on social media, particularly the big tech accounts. I’m not even sharing real adult content except places that’s allowed. My stuff is PG-13 at most… and still I get content banned.

This article is for anyone who is dealing with the same issue and wants to know how to protect yourself long-term, and how to fight back!

Ask Dirk!

I’m launching a new column right here on this site. It’s called “Ask Dirk!” and it’s just like “Dear Abby” for people who are kinky, into fetishes, or involved with the BDSM community.
