‘Pawn Star’ Olivia Black Fired After Porn Past Exposed

You may have noticed that the reality show “Pawn Stars” upgraded their line-up this season by including a new staff member known as Olivia.  The History Channel recently fired Olivia Black when the Enquirer revealed that she was a nude model with the Suicide Girls site.

This story is amazing to me for several reasons.  First off, we’re talking about “Pawn Stars” here, not “Masterpiece Theater”.  It’s not like the viewers of “Pawn Stars” are going to be morally outraged by Olivia’s past.  If anything it would spike their ratings.  Furthermore, it’s 2012, no one really cares about this sort of thing anymore.

I hope that Olivia lands on her feet and uses this moment of popularity to land an even bigger deal.  Olivia has a reddit discussion about the event here and a new set of photos that Suicide Girls is offering for free right now.  There is also a petition on Change.org to get her job back.  I’ve signed the petition myself, mostly as a protest against “Pawn Stars” and the History Channel.

It’s time to stand up for Olivia and other adults like her who choose to pose nude.  This national survey says that 36% of young females have sent or posted nude photos of themselves online (young men have similar numbers).  I suggest that these young adults should not be subject to losing their jobs because of what they do in their private lives.  Appearing on “Pawn Stars” is not a sensitive position like being a school teacher or something marketed to kids like a Disney show.

“Pawn Stars”… a show whose very name suggests something lascivious, was not harmed in any way by the Enquirer’s discovery.  The only person harmed here was Olivia Black and due entirely to a kneejerk reaction from hypocritical executives.

I took Film and Video Studies in college and I had one professor that practically taught an entire course on Quentin Tarantino films.  He never covered the persistent appearance of foot fetish in Tarantino films though.  His love of the female foot is fairly well documented including some scandal from a couple of years back.
