Professional Dominatrix Sinks Michael Phelps

The Scoop:

Professional dominatrix Kim Petro did an interview with the National Enquirer this week to talk about a session she had with Olympic Gold-Medalist Michael Phelps. She talked about him wearing women’s underwear, having a string tied around his “private parts” and performing a golden shower on him for $900.

Why This Matters:

What Michael Phelps does with his time and money are his own business and it should stay that way. As a professional dominatrix she should keep her clients and the details of her sessions private. I don’t know how much truth was in her tale, but that’s beside the point. She just damaged her own reputation and everyone else who is doing professional domination.

And Now… the Twitter Pornocalypse

The Scoop:

In the last edition of FETISHWEEK, I had a rundown on the Google/Blogger Pornocalypse. This week Twitter adjusted how it displays certain words in its search results. Words including #porn, #bondage, #femdom, #phonesex and #revengeporn no longer returned results in their Top Tweets.

When Twitter was asked about the new results they replied that it was a bug due to an algorithm change that aggressively filtered certain results. They also said it would be corrected.

I just did a search for some of those terms and they are coming up in their Top Tweets now.

Why This Matters:

Those “aggressively filtered” results happened because someone had chosen those particular phrases and coded them into the new algorithm. Even if things have returned to normal (for now) you can see a movement towards censoring results. While that may not have happened permanently, it’s obvious that this could change at any moment.

Twitter is one of the last large mainstream social networking platforms that allows entertainers, artists, photographers and writers with an adult audience to market their work directly to their audience.

Twitter is also one of the few places you can get news and information about adult subjects.

Hopefully the backlash about this latest “bug” will encourage Twitter to continue being a source for the free change of ideas. However, being a publically traded company also means that Twitter will always be in servitude to its stockholders, and that typically means more restrictions on adult content.

Seattle Music Critic Focuses on “The Top Songs of Dominatrix While They Work”

The Scoop:

The EMP Pop Conference theme this year is “Get Ur Freak On: Music, Weirdness, and Transgression.” Seattle music critic Chris Estey is presenting his paper “Her Greatest ‘Hits’: The Top Songs of Dominatrix While They Work,” on Friday, April 17^th at the conference.

Some of the groups he mentions in the interview are Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Nine Inch Nails, David Lynch, Nick Cave, Mazzy Star and others.

Why This Matters:

All of those musicians resonate with me and I’ve certainly heard them played at numerous BDSM gatherings. It’s interesting that most of them are from the 80’s and 90’s… while I love that music, I’d like to see some new groups in that mix.

Princess Zoe and I have talked about the subject of playtime music on The Fetish Show. Who would you add to the list of music to play during a scene?

I’d love to get a copy of his paper. Maybe they will release the whole thing after his presentation.

Those of us in the kink/BDSM community rarely get a positive story, so this was a nice surprise.
