Surprise!  The NSA is Spying on Your Sex Life

The Wall Street Journal reports, that among the other violations of our civil rights, NSA agents are guilty of spying on the electronic correspondence of spouses and lovers.  Termed LOVEINT by the NSA, or love intelligence, they are part of the over 3000 instances of civil rights violations reported over a one-year period.

Most of the reported violations are actually from self-reported cases, through polygraph tests or interviews.  For those of you playing the home game, that means we only know about a small fraction of actual violations.

I choose to not get too political on FETISHWEEK, but I will always point out violations of our civil rights. What we have learned over the past few months about the collection of data by the NSA should shock, repulse and scare you.

The United States government is not just spying on terrorists.  The NSA and other agencies are mass-collecting, storing and viewing emails, text messages, phone call records and correspondence on all social networking sites in the United States and around the world.  Your innocence is not a shield.  You are being watched.

You don’t have to be a terrorist, drug-dealer or even a political rival of whoever is in charge.  Low-level technocrats have access to your private life (including your late night sexting and nude photos you send to lovers) and the true scope of the violations is unknown.

The government has taken a law passed after September 11, 2001 and broadly used the language to justify violating the fourth amendment of the constitution.  Our rights are being violated under the illusion of protecting us against terrorism.  The problem with allowing any government to openly violate our right to privacy is that it has been proven, in every case, that they can’t be trusted.  You can’t give them the benefit of the doubt because history, even recent history, has proven government to be untrustworthy.  Even in the hands of good people, these tools have been abused.  In the hands of bad people these tools can be used to control you.

Obviously, privacy violations affect everyone, but if you’re a member of the BDSM or fetish community, you should be doubly concerned with faceless government agents poking into your correspondence.  Your private sex life can be used to threaten your job, discredit you or even put you in jail.

You should be aware of your rights and how they are being violated.  I would also advise you to see how your political representatives stand on this subject and vote accordingly.

  1. Though I am into exhibitionism and voyeurism, disregard for my basic Constitutional rights in such a manner leads me to believe that “the powers that be” behind the governments discernible structure are pooling “viable personal intelligence data” to use against us. In short, business as usual. To immerse myself in politics is engaging in the same madness that seeks to manipulate and utilize me. What’s a gurl to do? I don’t mean to sound flippant or dismissive of your well written piece, but I’ll live free and express myself in whichever way, with whoever I choose. Thanks for reading.
