FETISHWEEK: BDSM Censorship at Florida Library

The Feature Story in this issue of FETISHWEEK is tale of caution and victory.  On one hand, Don Walker, a spokesman for the Brevard County Public Library system in Florida, deemed Fifty Shades of Grey pornography (without even reading it) and removed it from the shelves.  There’s certainly debate on whether E.L. James’ book has artistic merit, but if you’re going to carry Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Lolita, then you have to carry Fifty Shades.

The victory came after the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Coalition Against Censorship (and a lot of angry residents) petitioned the Brevard County Commission.  After several weeks of national attention the government decided to offer the books to library patrons again.

If Fifty Shades of Grey were not about a BDSM relationship, it is doubtful that it would have attracted the attention of the library in the first place.  If the book wasn’t such a pop culture phenomenon then Brevard County’s censorship would not have attracted national attention.  The outcome this time was positive, but a lesser-known book could have been buried without anyone noticing.
